Registered sex offender accused of impregnating runaway teen in Lake County

A 24-year-old registered sex offender faces an aggravated criminal sexual abuse charge alleging he impregnated a 16-year-old runaway last year, Lake County authorities said Wednesday.

Arturo G. Torres II, 24, of the 600 block of Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan, was arrested after Lake County sheriff's detectives determined he is the father of the teenager's child, authorities said

Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Covelli said the runaway teen gave birth to the child before she was located in June 2017.

According to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, Torres previously was convicted on child pornography and indecent solicitation charges.

He was arrested at a Waukegan home Tuesday by the sheriff's warrants team and the U.S. Marshals Service-Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, officials said. He'd been wanted since June on a $500,000 warrant, authorities said.

While avoiding capture on the sex abuse charge, Torres missed court for pending charges of residential burglary and failure to report a change of address by a sexual offender, authorities said.

Torres remains held in Lake County jail on $2 million bail. He is next due in court Nov. 14.
