Elgin Sports Hall of Fame banquet set for Saturday
The Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation will be recognizing four outstanding teams from Elgin's past at the annual induction and recognition banquet on Saturday at The Centre of Elgin.
The teams are the 1924 and 1925 Elgin High School state champion boys basketball teams, the 1981 St. Edward state champion boys golf team, and the 1955 state second place Elgin High basketball team.
HOF inductee Chapman "Chappie" Wells' granddaughter, Linda Temmerman, will represent the 1924 and 1925 EHS teams. Scheduled to be in attendance from the St. Edward golf team is coach Jim Perkins, Sean O'Connor (captain), Jay Huffer, Peter Collingbourne, and Chris Carlson. The 1955 Elgin High basketball team will be represented by HOF inductee Tom Aley, Earl Lamp, and Sam Werner.
In addition, individuals being inducted into the Hall of Fame include 1961 EHS grad Mark Michelson for swimming, 1996 St. Edward alum Michael Bondi for wrestling, and Larkin High alumni Teddy Johnson (1997) for football, Sherick Simpson (1993) for basketball, and Rick Short (1991) for baseball.
Also, 54 individuals and 8 teams will be recognized for outstanding achievement, 27 high school and community college student/athletes shall receive recognition with $1,300 scholarships each, and Robert L. Todd will be the recipient of the Victor M. Masi Service Award.
