Special Olympians show their skills in Naperville, Mount Prospect

You will hear a lot of cheering for athletes at a Special Olympics event. One thing you won't hear is anyone cheering against someone. There was cheering across the suburbs yesterday at separate Special Olympics events at Prospect High School in Mount Prospect and at North Central College in Naperville on Sunday. Round Lake Beach police rally to help fellow officer

Round Lake Beach police and the community rallied yesterday to help one of their own. Police officer Kariann Hill was the focus of a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings, 500 E. Rollins Road, to help offset medical costs incurred in her battle against breast cancer. The 26-year-old Hill has been with the department for three years and was named its 2014 Officer of the Year. Trial set for Elgin man charged in fatal crash

An Elgin man is scheduled to face trial Aug. 10 on charges alleging he was fleeing from police while under the influence of drugs and alcohol when his car slammed into a minivan and killed its driver. Steven Luellen, 34, could be sentenced to as many as 14 years in prison if found guilty of an aggravated driving under the influence charge stemming from the May 27, 2014 crash. According to police and prosecutors, Luellen was under the influence of a combination of alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and anti-anxiety drugs when he drove his 2011 Nissan Maxima through a stop sign at Jefferson and Liberty streets in Elgin and collided with a vehicle driven by Miguel Austin Telles, 35, of Carpentersville. Schaumburg resident survey already impacting board decisions

A recent survey of Schaumburg residents already has influenced the village's 2015-16 budget decisions, and officials will meet Monday to discuss other ways the public input can be used to improve operations. “This is the first time that the village board has had the opportunity to get together as a group to discuss them,” Village Manager Brian Townsend said of the National Citizen Survey results. The results helped the village identify some key strengths — including quality of life, quality of development, economic opportunity, safety, cultural amenities and educational enrichment opportunities. White Sox pocket pair of wins over Royals

It was a doubly good day yesterday at U.S. Cellular Field, with the Sox quickly posting a 3-2 win in a game that was suspended by rain Friday with the score tied at 2 after 8 innings. Following a short break, Sunday's regularly scheduled game got rolling and the White Sox rallied to beat Kansas City 5-3. “We came to the ballpark to win two and we got it done,” starting pitcher John Danks said.
