Authorities: Judge attacked by inmate in Maywood courtroom

Authorities say a Cook County jail inmate appearing in a Maywood courtroom for a routine hearing attacked a judge.

Cook County Jail Executive Director Cara Smith said the judge was taken to a nearby hospital Thursday. The injuries suffered by the judge during the attack were not considered life-threatening.

Smith said 30-year-old Michael Ganter was being led to the holding cell after the judicial proceeding when he broke away from two deputies. Ganter struck the unidentified judge in the head, authorities said. A stun gun used in the ensuing scuffle might have hit the judge.

Smith said Ganter has been in custody since Aug. 14 on aggravated battery and resisting arrest charges. She said Ganter will face new charges.
