Schaumburg buys 1,000 more tons of road salt
Trustees paid the $221,456 bill for 1,000 additional tons of road salt last night and authorized the purchase of 400 tons more, if needed. The price of salt has increased from $47 per ton that it paid last year to $209 per ton due to salt shortages throughout the area caused by frozen rivers impeding barge deliveries. Full story.
Buffalo Grove rejects changes to incentive plan
Buffalo Grove officials rejected the latest proposal for an economic incentive package for the developer of a proposed Fresh Farms grocery store in the Cambridge Commons shopping center. Brett Doar brought his complex machines of pulleys and ramps to the DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville yesterday. Doar, known as Hollywood's "King of Contraptions," hosted an innovation open house that gave kids a chance to build a machine and see it in action. Full story.
Former Wheaton mayor's wife dies
Marcia Martin, wife of former Wheaton Mayor Robert J. Martin, has died at age 81. An architecture graduate from the University of Illinois, Marcia devoted her talents to getting involved in the community that her husband led from 1983 until his death in 1990. Her involvement ranged from designing fliers for town events to writing a book about the architecture in Wheaton. Full story.
Search continues for missing Des Plaines woman
Police continue to search for a Des Plaines woman whose empty car was discovered in Evanston. Police say relatives of Debra Fredricksen, 61, haven't heard from her since Friday. Her car was found near Elliot Park by Dempster Street and the lakefront. Full story.
Craigslist rape trial continues
The trial continues today for Charles Oliver, 45, of Woodstock, who is accused of raping and terrorizing eight women he met through Craigslist. A McHenry County jury yesterday watched a 12-minute video of Oliver having sex with a woman who agreed to meet him for sex in exchange for money. The state's attorney told jurors that nothing that happened in that encounter was consensual. Full story.
