Ex-boyfriend gets 47 years for slaying of Woodridge woman

The ex-boyfriend of Alyssa Van Meter, a Woodridge tow truck driver, was sentenced yesterday to 47 years for her stabbing death. Adam Belmont, 26, of Northlake, plead guilty last month to first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Full story.

New trial request filed in Lincolnshire day care killing

A new trial has been requested for Melissa Calusinski, the Lincolshire day care worker convicted of throwing a boy to the floor, killing him, her attorneys said yesterday. A jury convicted Calusinski in 2011. Her case has since made national news when it was reviewed by television show "48 Hours." Full story.

Mental health advocates hope Wheeling apartments just the beginning

A $17 million, 50-unit housing development called Philhaven broke ground yesterday at 2418 E. Hintz Road in Wheeling, where it's expected to open in the fall of 2016. It's purpose will be similar to Myers Place in Mount Prospect, which offers housing for residents who are disabled, mentally ill, or formerly homeless. Full story.

Cubs starting to get national attention
