Schaumburg library celebrates banned books
The Schaumburg Township District Library is helping teens and adults celebrate their right to read this September through a monthlong expansion of the national Banned Books Week.
Teens are invited to a special event from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, in Teen Place of the central library, 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg. Participants will make "banned" crafts and snacks while discussing the young adult novel "Eleanor and Park" by Rainbow Rowell. A limited number of copies are available to borrow from the Teen Desk.
Register for the event by calling (847) 923-3240.
Adults can participate through the Read a Latte book discussion from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Starbucks in the Streets of Woodfield shopping center, 601 N. Martingale Road in Schaumburg.
The group will discuss Alice Walker's "The Color Purple," one of many popular banned books. Copies are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Fiction Desk. Register by calling (847) 923-3347.
In addition to these programs, an exhibit of readers' "mug shots" will be displayed on the second floor of the central library, where patrons can see staff members posing with their favorite banned books.
In the lobby, library visitors can vote on whether they would go to jail to support their favorite books.
The national Banned Books Week runs from Sept. 21 to 27.
