"Manufacture Your Future" this week at Elgin library

Can you guess the company? Hint, they are local and they will be part of "Manufacture Your Future."

What company won Time Magazine's 2013 technology award for its collaboration on the Volvo V60 Plug-in Diesel vehicle by making a solar pavilion?

One-third of the global wind turbines run on gear boxes made by this company and its CEO met with President Obama to discuss cleaner and more secure energy.

This company is a leading supplier of precision parts to the food packaging, automotive and appliance industries. Its valves are used in every Coca-Cola fountain drink machine in the world.

One of the most enduring brands in North America and a world leader in its industry, this company is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Its products are regularly seen during caution periods at NASCAR races.

The Elgin Development Group and Gail Borden Public Library in partnership with Elgin Community College, Elgin Area School District U-46 and local business leaders will host an exhibit of leading manufacturers from the local area.

The exhibit is designed to showcase modern manufacturing, products made/sold locally and related career opportunities. ACME, Bison Gear, Bystronic, Custom Aluminum, Elgin Sweeper, Fabric Images, Hoffer Plastics, Norlux Corp., Otto Engineering, Plasmatreat, Winergy, and Wittenstein will be exhibiting on both floors of the main library. ECC, U-46, Manufacturing Careers Internship Program and Gail Borden Public Library will also have displays.

The exhibit event, "Manufacture Your Future," will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 5, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, there is a special ribbon cutting ceremony (the award-winning Fabric Images has dreamed up something special).

Gail Borden Executive Director Carole Medal will welcome Elgin Mayor David Kaptain, U-46 Superintendent Tony Sanders, ECC President David Sam, Central Unit District 301 Superintendent Todd Stirn, Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce chairman Terry Royer, and more. A Business After Hours will follow the kickoff.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the library will welcome 250 high school students from districts U-46 and 300. Exhibitors will staff their tables that morning. Tours of the library exhibit will start at 9 and 11 a.m. Both tour sessions will start out in the Meadows Community Rooms where there will be a half-hour panel discussion by four young people who have recently started working in the local manufacturing field. Then the students will tour the exhibit. After touring here, they tour local manufacturers. The 11 a.m. tour groups start with manufacturer tours before they arrive at the library. Elgin Sweeper will start driving a sweeper to the library at about 5 a.m. in the morning that Wednesday so they can bring a sweeper to park in the library lot for the morning. Elgin Sweeper is celebrating 100 years in business.

The "Manufacturing Your Future" event has been planned and organized by the Workforce Committee of the Elgin Development Group. Manufacturing is an important cornerstone of the local, state and national economy. Manufacturing jobs offer 27 percent higher wages than the Chicago Region average. Misconceptions about manufacturing often keep students from pursuing education and careers in manufacturing. "Manufacture Your Future," hosted during National Manufacturing Week, will provide information that will inspire those attending to consider manufacturing careers and therefore, dispel previous misconceptions.
