Beating the drum at Gail Borden
As a diversion from reading quietly this summer, the Gail Borden Public Library District encouraged kids to make a lot of noise in a meeting room at the library Wednesday in Elgin.
About 20 elementary school-age children made and decorated their own wooden framed drums, and then played them together as part of the "READ to the Rhythm" summer reading challenge, where anyone through middle school can earn prizes for reading until Aug 10. Readers complete a log of the books they read and then trade them for prizes, such as their choice of a paperback or bundle of comic books, a swim pass to a pool at Wing Park or Lords Park, ride passes for the Elgin Carnival in September and other prizes.
The library also offers Wednesday dance parties, Friday morning movies, and other family events. Some programs require preregistration.
