Libertyville Sports Complex patrons send regards to Blackhawks
Visitors to the Libertyville Sports Complex are among the well-wishers as the support for the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks continues a week after the deciding game.
"We've been having our customers sign this and join in the celebration," said Connie Kowal, recreation and sports complex director for the village. "This is our small way - and big way - to say congratulations."
Kowal commissioned a simple, two-foot by three-foot poster with ample space for fans to sign, and he has positioned it at various locations within the Sports Complex.
Kowal worked with the Chicago Cubs for many years and has relationships with many sports executives, including Blackhawks president John McDonough. In 2011, Kowal successfully landed a Blackhawks Road Watch party, which has become an annual event.
"We have a great working relationship and alliance with the Blackhawks," he said.
The card is a way to thank the team for bringing another championship to Chicago and providing weeks of excitement for fans of all ages, said Kowal, who planned to deliver it to the United Center on Monday while in Chicago on another matter.
The last signers were the 5- to 12-year-old participants in the village's summer sports camp at the complex. Floor hockey is one of the available activities. During the playoff run, some of the kids would try to mimic their favorite Blackhawks or wear their jerseys.
