Illinois storms spawn hail, winds, flooding

Parts of Illinois are cleaning up after storms caused golf ball-sized hail and flash flooding in some communities.

The National Weather Service says hail was reported across northern, central and western Illinois on Sunday.

In the McLean County community of Towanda, officials said baseball-sized hail fell briefly. And egg-sized hail was reported in Greenup in Cumberland County.

Kirk Huettl is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lincoln. He tells The (Bloomington) Pantagraph that the weekend storms were "a real taste of springtime severe weather."

Meanwhile, up to 18 inches of water covered some roads in Woodford, Ford and Kankakee counties.

Winds in some areas reached 60 mph, downing power lines. In Joliet, the wind tore off a motel roof.

No major injuries were reported.
