Woman, 69, killed trying to cross road in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A 69-year-old woman has died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to cross a street in Fort Wayne.

The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/1CoQJXL ) reports Odie Mae Hengst was fatally struck by a vehicle near her home on Sunday evening. The Alan County coroner has determined she died from blunt-force trauma.

According to the Allen County Sheriff's Department, the driver who hit Hengst has been cooperative with authorities.

Her death marks the third traffic fatality in Fort Wayne and Allen County so far this year.

It's at least the fourth time a pedestrian has been fatally struck by passing motorists since November. But it was the first of those incidents in which the driver stopped at the scene.
