St. John's Lutheran School celebrates teacher's milestone

On May 17, St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Elgin will hold a special service at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate Kim Bimler's 25 years of faithful service in the teaching profession.

After the service, there will be a luncheon in the gym with presentations and speakers.

She graduated from Concordia University in River Forest. She was part of the first "University" class with a bachelor of arts degree, with majors in education, language arts and physical education. Before coming to St. John's, Bimler taught at Immanuel Dundee, Trinity St. John in Nashville, Ill., St. John's Mayfair in Chicago, and St. Luke Itasca.

Currently, Bimler teaches third grade and serves as the middle school athletic director. Previously at St. John's, she taught fourth-grade language, reading, physical education, middle school language arts, and eighth-grade homeroom. In addition to teaching, she has been the Jump Rope for Heart coordinator, Little Angels missions coordinator, directed multiple operettas and Christmas services, Battle of the Books coordinator, yearbook adviser, volleyball coach, Hoops for Heart coordinator. She has helped with the St. John's Writers Program, run various sports camps, taught an afterschool bowling program, helped in the school library, directed children's choir, and helped in the configuring and implementing of the software program. She has served as student council adviser, Walcamp helper, Washington, D.C., chaperone, Boxtops For Education coordinator and walkathon co-chair.

She has displayed a nearly lifelong devotion to St. John's. This is where she attended school, as did her son. Teaching at St. John's meant she was following in her mother's footsteps. Kim and husband, Kurt, were married at St. John's. Kim is actively involved in St. John's congregation, delivering frequent children's messages during church services. She also has led or helped with Bible class, vacation Bible school, youth board, Lutherfest activities, Lutherfest bowling, Young Moms Group, contemporary praise team "Spiritual Rock," Walcamp worship services, coffee hours, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, various call committees and youth group leader.

In the community, she has been involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Boosters Club and assistant booster representative and coordinator for choir at South Elgin High School, youth bowling coach, member of Lutheran Sports Association Basketball Committee, IHSA volleyball official. She also has published work in an educational publication.

Bimler is planning on many more years of service and devotion to her profession.
