Dist. 23 needs, deserves tax hike
Early voting has started and, although we no longer have school-aged children, my husband and I will be voting 'YES' for the Prospect Heights School District 23 referendum because we strongly believe in the benefits of supporting public education.
The last time D23 passed a referendum for capital improvements was 37 years ago when our children were the beneficiaries of that referendum. I believe D23 has been good stewards of our tax dollars and I want the children in my neighborhood and all D23 students to have access to the best education possible and be in safe, secure buildings.
D23's tax rate is the second lowest of eight neighboring districts.
If the referendum does not pass, the district may have no choice but to consider cutting programs, staff and student services. If that happens, young families will look to neighboring districts to buy a house, and property values for the residents of District 23 will decrease. A 'no' vote could result in overcrowded classrooms, less one-on-one attention from teachers and reductions in programs at all four of the district's schools. Everyone will pay the price if D23 schools cannot offer what our neighboring districts can.
While no one wants their property taxes to go up, investing in education is never a bad investment. According to the National Bureau of Economic Statistics, property values increase by around $20 for every $1 spent on school funding. Everyone benefits from good schools with up-to-date facilities and dedicated staff. Quality teachers stay in school districts where the community supports them. I encourage all residents of Prospect Heights School District 23 to support this referendum for the benefit of current and future students, as well as the community at large.
