Brito, Antioch pass up Round Lake

On Friday night, Antioch inducted its 1966-67 boys basketball team into the school's sports Hall of Fame and six members made their way to the court before the game.

Then a current Antioch player displayed the kind of performance that might eventually get him to join the Hall of Famers.

Senior guard Danny Brito came off the bench after recovering from an ankle injury and brought life to his team in the second half - especially in the third quarter. On a move to the basket, Brito dished the ball behind his head to a wide open Reece Eldridge for an uncontested layup.

Antioch followed Brito's lead and the Sequoits went on to win their North Suburban Prairie game against visiting Round Lake 45-32.

"Once the adrenaline kicked in it was all good," said Brito, who was out of the lineup for the last 10 days and finished with 4 points with multiple assists. "We do gym basketball, and we mess around a little bit. We've been practicing that recently. I was just driving and I couldn't get it to Reece with a dump pass. I just decided to go with a no-look behind my head. I saw him coming in toward the basket. I felt like it gave us a lot of momentum. It really brought the energy up, and that's what we needed."

That basket capped a 13-6 run to give Antioch its biggest lead of the game at 28-19 with 2:08 left in the third quarter.

Antioch had held a 15-13 lead at the break after a defensively oriented first half for both teams.

The Sequoits (4-4, 1-2) came out in the second half by hitting successive treys from Brito, Brandon Dade (11 points) and Nathan Formella.

"Brito is really our quarterback out there," Antioch coach Jim White said. "We know what we're capable of doing. We're not a great shooting team yet, but we're a capable shooting team and we're working a lot at it. We have a lot of weapons, and all it takes is one or two to go a night."

Antioch led 28-21 at the end of the third quarter and extended the advantage to double digits in the final quarter.

Round Lake (2-6, 0-2) was trying to recover from a 1-point loss to Grant on Wednesday night but had a hard time scoring in this one. Zack Kuligoski led the Panthers with 8 points.

"Our shots didn't fall," Round Lake coach Jeremy Fisher said. "We had a great shooting performance on Wednesday (against Grant). This was the exact opposite. We just had a hard time getting the ball in the hole. I thought defensively we were doing OK. In the third quarter, (Antioch) got hot and burned our zone a little bit. We had to go man in the fourth."

Antioch travels to play Westosha Central (Wis.) at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee at 2 p.m. Saturday.
