Bike lane coming to Central Road in Des Plaines
Striped, paved bike shoulders will be put in this summer along Central Road between River and Wolf roads in Des Plaines. The 8-foot wide asphalt shoulder will substantially complete the Des Plaines portions of the regional Barrington-Wilmette Harbor Bikeway, officials said. More than three-quarters of the $1.3 million project cost is being funded by a federal grant. The city is picking up the remainder of the costs. The city council endorsed the project this week, though some aldermen expressed safety concerns for cyclists and pedestrians since the lane won't be physically separated from Central Road, a 45 mph street.
