214@100: Many sports highlights at Hersey over the years
John Hersey High School has produced numerous teams and individuals who went to state sporting competitions. Hersey's most recent success at a state tournament was in 2010, when the girls basketball team went to Bloomington and placed fourth at state.
The 1987 football team won the state championship by beating East St. Louis 26-6 under the direction of coach Bruce Glover. In tennis, the Nasser sisters won state championships. Jennifer, the older of the two, won a state championship in the 1990-91 season. Her sister, Katherine, also won a state championship during the 1994 season.
One of Hersey's finest athletes, Gary Morava, was the captain of the gymnastics team, and led the group to a second-place finish during the 1969-70 season. He also won the state championship in the all around competition, and was Hersey's first state champion.
These individuals inspired future Huskies to work on becoming champions themselves.
