Wolves fall 2-1 in OT

The Chicago Wolves were topped 2-1 in overtime Sunday, but they earned 3 of a possible 4 points against Charlotte on opening weekend at the Allstate Arena.

Defenseman Petteri Lindbohm scored the only goal for the Wolves (1-0-1-0), while goaltender Jordan Binnington (0-1-0) stopped 14 shots through regulation and overtime. The Wolves settled for 1 point despite outshooting Charlotte 43-16.

"Throughout the game, we're sticking to what we want to do," Wolves coach John Anderson said. "I thought we controlled the game for most of it. I think if we play that way throughout the year, we're going to win a lot more than we lose."

For the second night in a row, the Wolves opened the scoring, this time at 6:53 in the second period. Ty Rattie fired a shot on goal that tripped up Checkers goaltender Drew MacIntyre and bounced out to the slot. Lindbohm pinched in and buried the rebound top-shelf over the sprawled MacIntyre for his first professional goal in North America.

Charlotte answered at 15:16 of the middle period, taking advantage of a five-minute power play to even the score at 1-1 after Wolves right wing Cody Beach was ejected for charging. Kevin Lowe connected on a passing play with right wing Alex Aleardi, who stuffed a loose puck past Binnington in the crease.

While the Wolves controlled most of the third period, outshooting Charlotte 18-3, they were unable to beat MacIntyre, who finished with 42 saves.

Center Ben Holmstrom finished it 1:32 into the extra session, crashing the crease and rebounding Rasmus Rissanen's shot from the corner to beat Binnington over his glove-side shoulder.

The Wolves continue their season-opening, five-game homestand Friday and Saturday with 7 p.m. games against Lake Erie.
