Fire in abandoned Arlington Heights restaurant leaves no serious damage
A small fire Sunday night in the former Yanni's Greek restaurant in Arlington Heights may have been set by someone who broke into the abandoned eatery to keep warm, officials said Monday.
The fire was reported about 8:30 p.m. in the building at Arlington Heights and Algonquin roads, Arlington Heights Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Essling said.
The fire did not cause significant damage to the building, which has been vacant since Yanni's closed in 2012, Essling said .
“One of the doors was open and in the lobby some stuff appeared to be piled up and set on fire,” Essling added. “It doesn't appear they intended to burn the place down.”
A crew was called to board up the building's windows, and Essling said the building was slated for demolition even before Sunday's fire.
