York survives Glenbard West scare

Glenbard West made it a little scary for York at the end of Monday night's girls basketball game.

It wasn't enough to make up for the scare the Dukes gave the Hilltoppers in the middle quarters.

York won the West Suburban Silver game 56-50 in Elmhurst.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 1-4) had a great start to the game, scoring the first 8 points and ending the first quarter with a 17-10 lead. York (5-4, 2-3) tied the game at 17 on a Danielle Dennis basket with 5:28 to go in the period, and after a pair of Hilltoppers baskets, the Dukes went on a 10-0 run to end the half with a 27-23 lead.

"I was a little disappointed in our lag in the second quarter," Glenbard West coach Karen Persinger said. "Moreso our defensive lag. We missed some passes, but defensively we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be in that second quarter, and it came back to bite us."

The Dukes' full-court press took a bite also.

"We made some changes in the second and third quarters in terms of using our extended zone defenses a little bit more," Constable said. "I think that paid dividends."

The Hilltoppers never caught up - the York lead reached 12 points - though they did come close in the final minute.

The Hilltoppers pulled within 3 points on Catherine Reedy's two free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining, but Caylin Rufus' three-point play put the game out of reach with 8.4 seconds to go.

"The kids showed a lot of heart tonight," Persinger said. "They fought back in it, got within 3, but we ran out of clock."

"I felt like we just kept exchanging one free throw for their two or a missed basket and they'd come down and knock down a shot. So they had a lot of momentum going there," Constable added.

Kaylin Kenny came off the bench to lead the Dukes in scoring with 12 points. Jaclyn Saco added 11 points.

"She had some huge 3s, didn't she?" Constable asked rhetorically about Kenny. "Some huge 3s. And being a senior I couldn't be more thrilled and more happy for her, because she's put in a lot of time and a lot of hard work. And she deserves that moment. Those were some huge baskets."

Grey Hayes led Glenbard West with 16 points on 9-of-12 free-throw shooting. Reedy added 15 points.
