Warren's best effort yet too much for Mundelein
With each game, a young Warren boys basketball team seems one step closer to jelling.
On Friday night, in the fourth game of the Mundelein Thanksgiving Tournament, the Blue Devils put together their finest performance of the young season.
It was as if junior guard Jayson Dorsey knew just where to find his teammates, as his 6 assists to go along with 13 points were enough to lead Warren to a 78-38 win over the host Mustangs.
Warren evened its tournament record and season mark at 2-2 while Mundelein (0-4) is still searching for its first win.
"I think it all comes with time," said Dorsey, who also contributed 3 steals. "The first couple of games we have been together, but it hasn't been the same. Tonight it really started to click for us."
The clicking started early for the Blue Devils as Warren jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter. The defense for the Devils was the key, as Warren held Mundelein without a field goal for 7:20 of the quarter.
"That's where a lot of our first-half points came from tonight, from our defense," said Warren coach Jon Jasnoch. "We had guys really getting after it, getting their hands on balls and getting deflections that led to points at the other end."
Warren broke the game open in the second and third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 43-24. To go with Dorsey's outburst on offense was a 13-point night from junior Juwan Perry and 10 from up-and-coming sophomore Brandon Ellis.
"I have played with some of these guys for a while and tonight we could feel that chemistry starting to come together," Dorsey said.
The usually prolific 3-point shooting from Mundelein wasn't there for the Mustangs on Friday night. Mundelein went 5-for-22 from long range, led by a trio from junior Aaron Woolford. He led Mundelein with 11 points while sophomore Nick Parmley added 10.
"We can use the excuses all we want, that we have five sophomores and all that," Mundelein coach Corey Knigge said. "Warren outplayed us tonight. They played harder, they executed better - they were better than us tonight."
