Baseball: Fox Valley roundup Saturday, April 4
Elgin's Scotty Palmer enjoyed a productive outing against his former St. Edward teammates Saturday in a 4-2 nonconference baseball win at Wing Park.
Palmer, who transferred from St. Edward to Elgin for his senior year, held the Green Wave to 2 earned runs on 5 hits. He walked 5 and struck out 4 in 5 innings. At the plate, Palmer went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI to lead Elgin (3-5).
Senior Jack Tierney took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. The Wisconsin-Oshkosh recruit struck out 11. Vicente Camerena went 3-for-4 for St. Edward (2-3).
Bartlett splits: The Hawks defeated Maine West 12-7 in the morning but were upended by Palatine in the afternoon, 3-2. Against Maine West, Austin Hilvert went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and drove in a run, Cameron Mays homered and drove in 3 and Tripp Paris hit a solo blast. Jordan Flint was the hard-luck loser against Palatine. The senior gave up 3 runs, none earned, on 3 hits and 4 walks in 5⅓ innings. He struck out 5. Myles Zilinsky (RBI) went 3-for-4 and Tripp Paris was 2-for-4 with a double for Bartlett (2-3).
Rolling Meadows 4, Streamwood 0: The Sabres (1-4) were unable to score any of their 9 baserunners in this nonconference loss. Chris Bauer and Hayden Holota each doubled. Jonah Seckel took the loss despite limiting Rolling Meadows to 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits in 7 innings. He struck out 6 without issuing a walk.
Hoffman Estates 24, Larkin 2: The Royals' first loss of the season was definitive as they were outhit 18-4 and committed 7 errors behind losing pitcher Nick Fillmore (0-1). Tanner Gardon and Andrew Chmiola drove in runs for Larkin (2-1).
Jackson (Mo.) 10, Westminster Christian 0: Frank Anguilo collected 3 of the Warriors' 4 hits in this loss in Missouri. Justin Rasmussen allowed 6 earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out 5 in 4 innings for Westminster Christian (2-4).
Crystal Lake South 6, Marian Central 5: No. 9 hitter Andrew Swiatly's one-out single with runners at second and third scored courtesy runner Michael Swiatly and Matt Schingel to lift the Gators to a walk-off nonconference victory in Crystal Lake. Dakota Siwula doubled to drive in Cameron Geisser with the first run of CL South's 3-run, game-winning rally, which made a winner of relief pitcher John Smerecky. He pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 hits, including a solo home run. Tim Siesennop took a no-decision for CL South (6-2) after allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts.
Notre Dame 5, Jacobs 1: Matt Kozlak (2-for-4) posted the only multihit game as Jacobs was outhit 9-5 by the Dons in this nonconference meeting. Jeff Sidor (double), Owen Oreskovich and Brenden Heiss had the other hits for Jacobs (9-3). Ryan Sargent (2-1) took the loss. The senior yielded 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and a walk and struck out 3 in 4 innings of work.
Dundee-Crown 8, Schaumburg 7: The Chargers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to win this nonconference matchup. Dundee-Crown took the lead when cleanup man Jared Ludwig's RBI double scored Brett Johnson. The rally made a winner of relief pitcher Jim Welzien, who allowed 2 walks but no runs or hits in 1⅓ innings. Danny Denz and Michael Cruise drove in the other runs for Dundee-Crown (7-1).
