Girls golf: Batavia's McCoy advances to state

Though a female, Madi McCoy was literally the last man standing Tuesday in Naperville.

The Batavia senior golfer became only the second player in school history to become a two-time state qualifier for the girls Class 2A state tournament.

McCoy, with a playoff widely anticipated, was in the final pairing of the Waubonsie Valley sectional.

McCoy had the only 84 among the 40 individual qualifiers to earn the last berth to Hickory Point - just north of Decatur - for the state tournament this weekend.

"I played terrible, honestly," McCoy said. "I wasn't that nervous (waiting for the final results). It's kind of mellow right now."

Lincoln-Way Central (323) won its first team title in history; Naperville North (326) and Hinsdale Central (329) also advanced to the state tournament.

The only other Fox Valley area qualifiers - Kaitlin Stangl of Batavia and West Aurora senior Sienna Rucka - had their careers end in Naperville.
