Boy Scout digs deep for Naperville Garden Plots

Naperville Garden Plot renters invest hours of hard work tending their crops, and sharing their harvest with family, friends and the community.

Thanks to a local Boy Scout working hard to earn his Eagle Scout rank, these gardeners will enjoy some new amenities in 2015.

David Brancato, 13, who attends Hill Middle School in Naperville, is accustomed to hard work. He balances soccer, band, and challenging classes, while keeping his sights set on Scouting's highest rank.

When it came time to plan and lead his Eagle Project, Brancato knew he wanted to give the gardeners a place to take a well-deserved rest. He worked with Lynette Hoole, Volunteer Coordinator for the Park District, eventually deciding to improve the area around one of the water stations.

Brancato's team of volunteers not only constructed a permanent bench and an eight foot tall information kiosk, but also spread rock to provide better footing for the gardeners. He raised over $700 to pay for the project. Donations came in from Garden Plot renters, Troop 101 families, neighborhood friends, and a fundraising night at Buffalo Wild Wings.

In addition to monetary donations, many gardeners also encouraged the crew as they watched the work progress. Several remarked that they were proud to see the team of young people donating their time and energy to make a difference in the community, as well as making a connection to the Garden Plots.
