Haviland has it going in Lakes' win
Ellie Haviland had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists, and Lakes' girls basketball team earned its win first under coach Brian Phelan, 58-39 over visiting Cary-Grove in the Lake Zurich-hosted Turkey Thriller on Thursday night.
Lakes (1-1) jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter, extended its lead to 33-14 by halftime and was up 42-25 after three.
Izzy Quaranta also had a double-double for Lakes, as she scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Natalie Iacopetti added 10 points, 3 rebounds and 6 steals.
Vernon Hills 53, Glenbrook North 26: Freshman Kayla Caudle had 16 points and 8 rebounds for the Cougars, who improved to 2-0 in their own tournament.
Freshman Dakiya Daniels added 11 points and 6 steals for Vernon Hills, while Katie Burrows had 7 points and 4 rebounds. The Cougars pulled away from the Spartans in the fourth quarter by outscoring them 21-3.
Wauconda 38, Belvidere 16: Katie Rossetti had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals, as the Bulldogs opened their inaugural tournament with a victory.
Corrina Vaughan added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for Wauconda.
Schaumburg 40, Stevenson 26: At Schaumburg, the host Saxons shut down the Patriots.
Stevenson (1-1) was led in scoring by Kiana Cencula with 10 points. Jessica Burke had 6 points for the Patriots, who resume the tournament Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Evanston.
