Five reasons March is a great sports month
- Boys basketball state finals: The suburbs should be well-represented when the boys play their Final Four March 7-9 in Champaign, especially in Class 4A.
- Girls basketball state finals: Class 4A features four suburban teams in this weekend’s Final Four, and Montini and Hinsdale South each play a downstate team in the semifinals Friday in Class 3A.
- Major League Baseball Opening Day: How is this not a national holiday? The Sox open at home vs. Detroit on March 28, the Cubs at Texas the same day. Hopefully it’s the start of something good for at least one of the local teams.
- NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday: March 17 will be a fun day for the men and women, and not just because it’s St. Patrick’s Day. The best round? That’s the first round, right? Oh, and the men’s Big Ten Tournament final is March 17 too.
- March also brings warmer weather to play golf (though February gave us a couple bonus days this year), NFL mock draft season hits the stretch run, and fantasy baseball drafts for those of us who want better players to root for than we’ll find on the Cubs or White Sox.
