American Wind Band will be bringing the ‘Heat’ to Feb. 25 concert

On Sunday, Feb. 25, the American Wind Band will put on some “Heat” at the 3 p.m. concert at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road in Elmhurst. No tickets will be sold but donations will be accepted in support of the band.

The music directors have chosen music to warm your heart for these last weeks of winter.

Selections to be performed include: “Cuban Overture” by George Gershwin; “Dragon Fight” by Otto Schwarz; “Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst; Maurice Jarre’s theme from the motion picture “Lawrence of Arabia”; “The World is Waiting for the Sunrise” by Lockhart-Seitz, and stirring marches. “A Night in Tunisia” by Dizzie Gillespie and Frank Paparelli will feature the saxophone section.

American Wind Band is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 adult community band based in Downers Grove, created to promote and encourage the appreciation of concert band literature through performance. This group of dedicated volunteer musicians knows the power of music to inspire and move the soul and presents concerts at various venues, extending the enjoyment of band music to all.

New members are always welcome at band rehearsals (no audition required) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove.

American Wind Band also endeavors to inspire talented young musicians by sponsoring a scholarship competition for eighth grade and high school band musicians. Scholarships are provided to encourage private music study or attendance at a band camp of the student’s choosing.

This year’s scholarship winners will be featured at the April 21 concert, also at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.

More information about joining the band or advertising in future programs is available at americanwindband.org. Questions can be sent via email to americanwindbandil@gmail.com.
