No. 13 Butler beats Detroit

Matt Howard scored 20 points, and Julian Betko hit a late 3-pointer to help No. 13 Butler beat host Detroit 53-46 Thursday night in the Horizon League opener for both teams.

Howard, a freshman center, scored 16 points in the second half, and finished with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Bulldogs (8-0).

Jon Goode had 21 points and 7 assists for the Titans (4-4).

Villanova 68, LSU 67: Dante Cunningham's rebound layup with 5.9 seconds left capped No. 25 Villanova's rally from a 21-point deficit that stunned visiting LSU.

The Wildcats (6-1) seemed out of the game that was part of the Big East/SEC Invitational, trailing 54-33 with eight minutes left before rallying.

Marcus Thornton led LSU (5-3) with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Women

Duke 49, Rutgers 44: Carrem Gay's free throw with 30 seconds left put No. 17 Duke ahead to stay, as the host Blue Devils (6-3) defeated No. 4 Rutgers.

Epiphanny Prince had 15 points for Rutgers (5-2).
