Latest from the White Sox winter meetings
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It's hardly a blockbuster move, but the White Sox were involved in the first trade of the winter meetings Monday.
The Sox acquired outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor-league first baseman Chris Carter, one of their top prospects.
Quentin, 25, batted .214 with 16 doubles, 5 home runs and 31 RBI in 81 games for the Diamondbacks this season.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder, the Diamondbacks' first-round draft pick in 2003 (No. 29 overall), batted .230 with 14 HR and 63 RBI in two seasons with Arizona.
Carter, 20, batted .291 with 25 home runs and 93 RBI at Class A Kannapolis this season. Carter ranked third in the South Atlantic League in home runs and tied for third in RBI.
The White Sox also designated left-handed pitcher Heath Phillips for assignment.
Phillips, 26, was 13-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 28 starts for Class AAA Charlotte this season. Phillips made 6 relief appearances for the Sox in September, going 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA.
Sox to play in Civil Rights Game (2:20 p.m.)
Major-league baseball on Monday was to announce the White Sox and New York Mets will play in the second annual Civil Rights Game on March 29 in Memphis.
The game will be played at AutoZone Park, the home of the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds.
The St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians played in the inaugural Civil Rights Game, which was televised on ESPN.
