Soccer players kicking to help Lazarus House

A holiday soccer tournament Sunday aims to score some donations for a St. Charles homeless shelter.

The 5th annual St. Charles Holiday Alumni Soccer Classic starts at 3 p.m. at St. Charles Sportsplex, 1400 Foundry St., with the championship game at 6:30 p.m.

This year's fundraiser benefits Lazarus House, 214 Walnut St., which provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and rental assistance to families and individuals in need.

St. Charles native and Northern Illinois University women's soccer coach Marci Miller Jobson, a member of the 2007 U.S. Women's World Cup team, is among those scheduled to play.

"We're grateful to be the designated recipient of funds raised through the tournament," Lazarus House Executive Director Darlene Marcusson said in an announcement. "It's a great concept that allows both the tournament players and spectators to participate in supporting good causes while enjoying the sport they love."

The participation fee is $35 for players. Advanced registration is encouraged, but players can sign up the day of the event.

Spectators should bring at least three items to donate from a Lazarus House "needs list," which includes toiletries and cleaning supplies. The full list is available online at www.lazarushouseonline.com/needs.php.

The tournament, which benefits a different charity each year, coincides this year with the 30th anniversary of Tri-Cities Soccer. A celebration will follow at the Beehive Tavern and Grille, 204 W. Main St., St. Charles.
