On third try, Pitino wins 500th

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It took three attempts, but Rick Pitino's 500th career victory looked an awful lot like the 499 that came before it.

Earl Clark scored a career-high 23 points, and the Cardinals made Pitino the 17th active Division I coach with 500 wins as Louisville eased by Marshall 85-75 on Tuesday night.

Louisville (6-3) snapped a two-game losing streak by doing the things that made Pitino one of the most successful coaches of his generation: pressure defense, some 3-point shooting and high energy at both ends of the court.

The victory upped Pitino's career record to 500-185, but after disappointing performances in losses to Dayton and Purdue.

Markel Humphrey had 24 points and Mark Dorris added 21 for Marshall (5-3).
