Police investigating Aurora death

Authorities are investigating the death of a 21-year-old Batavia man, a possible victim of a gang-related shooting, in Aurora.

Craig Escamilla was pronounced dead after his car collided with another vehicle at the corner of Galena Boulevard and West Street, at around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

But Aurora police said an investigation revealed that Escamilla's 2001 Ford Escape SUV was involved in a shooting one block south at Downer Place and West.

Aurora police said that following the shooting, the SUV traveled at a high rate of speed northbound on West, ran the stop sign at Galena and collided with an eastbound 2007 Chevrolet Impala. The SUV then crashed through a fence and into the front yard of a home, ejecting Escamilla, who ended up in the yard under the vehicle's rear axle.

Aurora police are investigating the incident, which police said a preliminary investigation is pointing toward gang involvement.

A handgun was recovered in the SUV, police said.

Kane County Coroner Chuck West said an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

"We don't know at this point whether he was shot," West said. "Based on the initial examination of him, we did not find any bullet holes, but we're going to do an autopsy and attempt to see what we can find.

"It is our understanding that the window of the car was shot out," he added.

Police said two men were seen bolting from the SUV and heading northbound toward New York Street.

The four people in the Impala, a 54-year-old father, a 50-year-old mother, a 16-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son, all from Hinckley, were treated and released from an Aurora hospital.
