Tournament victory: The eighth grade Carmel boys basketball team swept through The College of Lake County's double elimination tournament by going a perfect 4-0 to win their first Championship of the season.
Carmel beat Carl Sandburg from Mundelein 36-34, the Gurnee Vikings 46-40, Beach Park 35-31 and the Vikings again in the Championship 53-35.
Carmel trailed late in all but one of their tournament games. Defense and rebounding by Kenneth Miller, Jordan Kos, Patrick Kenny, Connor Lyons and Sean Boban kept the Corsairs in every game. Three-point field goals by Matt Mooney and Connor Jordan helped the Carmel wins. Ben Bruns and Hutch Herchenbach knocked down free throws late in games to seal the victories. Jordan Taylor led all scorers with a double-figure average, scoring 43 points for the tournament.
On Dec. 16, the Jr. Corsairs will host a tournament at Carmel High School in Mundelein. All games will be played Sunday afternoon.
Hockey
Patriots vs. Warren: Stevenson's match against Warren got off to a slow start, and the first period ended with no score. Play escalated in the second period when the Patriots scored 4 unanswered goals by Gordon Ochi, Wayne Glickstern, Myles Lobus and Mark Leyderman, whose goal was short-handed and unassisted. The Ochi and Glickstern goals were set up by passes from Nick Fasano and Brad Levinson, respectively. Lobus' goal was the result of Max's shot from the blue line which went wide, but he got the rebound of Justin One's shot for the marker. In the third period, One, Ricky Razdolsky and Marc Weiner scored three more goals for the Patriots.
Stevenson stretched its Metro record to 8-1-1. Mitch Levinson had his second consecutive shutout.
