Police end 5-hour standoff with Batavia boy
Police ended a five-hour standoff with a 17-year-old Batavia boy wielding a samurai sword at 3 a.m. today without any injuries.
Charges against Alex Chaffee, of 1065 North Avenue, are pending, but will likely include several charges of aggravated assault, according to Batavia Police Commander Greg Thrun.
Police were called to the house at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Chaffee was threatening to harm or kill family members and officers, according to police.
The boy's family members barricaded themselves in bedrooms and got out of the house through bedroom windows.
After police couldn't make contact with Chaffee, the Kane County SWAT team went in and took him into custody at 3 a.m., according to police.
In addition to Batavia Police and the SWAT team, the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, Geneva Police Department, St. Charles Police Department, Batavia Fire Department and Batavia Electric Department assisted at the scene.
