An idea that puts exercise to work
A recent letter [Mark Stastny, Dec. 15] urged homeowners to shovel the snow from their walks for those who use them for exercise -- running or walking.
Mark Twain once said of exercise that he could never see any advantage in getting tired. Let's consider making the sweat work.
Might I suggest forming a "random act of kindness brigade" of those who walk or run in snow for fitness.
Why not carry a snow shovel and when you encounter an unshoveled walk, clear it.
Think how gratifying it would be to the resident -- some unfit, perhaps ill or handicapped person.
It would also make postal workers, dog walkers and others less fit but still moving happy. School children could abandon walking in the streets and return to sidewalks.
You will get your exercise and be able to cut off a mile or so of your daily trek. Think of it as payment in kind for a fresh air health club. You will probably feel good about your act of kindness (unless you notice the slug behind his curtains watching TV from his recliner).
In other seasons the brigade could consider lawn mowing and leaf raking. Maybe gutter cleaning?
