Briefs: Sales tax referendum info

The Deer Park village board has scheduled two meetings to present information and answer questions on the sales tax increase referendum question that will appear on the Feb. 5 primary ballot. The village is asking residents to approve a 0.5 percentage point sales tax increase, or an additional half-cent on the dollar. The meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 11 and Jan 9. Both will take place at the Vehe Barn, 23570 W. Cuba Road.

$200,000 raised by school

Carmel Catholic High School's 2007 Student Tuition Assistance Resource Gala raised more than $200,000 benefiting the Mundelein school's tuition assistance program for students in financial need. Guests contributed more than $50,000 during a live auction, enabling the school to qualify for an additional $50,000 challenge grant from the ViBern Foundation. Proceeds from the live auction and matching grant will be used specifically for need-based tuition assistance for minority students.

Cheerleaders win event

Warren Township High School's varsity cheerleading squad won first place last weekend at the Midwest Cheer Fest Competition in Southwest suburban Orland Park. All 24 cheerleaders, including the four alternates, participated in the competition against three other teams in the Super Large Varsity Division. The team is slated to compete Dec. 16 in the Stevenson High School invitational cheerleading competition in Lincolnshire. "The girls work really well together. They have been doing an outstanding job," said Merissa Mercil, the varsity cheerleading coach at Gurnee-based Warren High School District 121.
