Truck driver dies, causing Randall crash

The driver of a semitrailer truck died Friday afternoon before his truck hit several cars that had been involved in an earlier accident on Randall Road in Elgin, authorities said.

The driver, Randy J. Jay, 54, of Schiller Park, was heading south on Randall over the bridge that crosses the Northwest Tollway when he died, police said.

"The initial indications are that the truck driver may have died due to a major medical issue of some sort, not from any injuries due to the crash," police said in a written statement.

Six cars and the Freightliner box truck were involved in the accident.

A woman in one of the vehicles was taken with minor injuries to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, authorities said. Ten other people involved declined transport to the hospital.

The truck driver was driving for J. N. Moser Trucking out of Montgomery.

Police say his semi went off the road, over the eastbound exit ramp onto I-90 and through a grassy median, and came to a stop near Mason Road.

"He was the one that traveled the farthest," he said. "Maybe 50 yards" beyond the other vehicles.

Southbound Randall was closed early Friday evening, authorities said. The eastbound exit ramp from I-90 also was closed. It has since been reopened.
