Early run lifts Grens to 55-43 win over Barrington

A first-quarter run made all the difference for host Elk Grove, which caused a 17-1 drought for Barrington.

Although the Fillies were able to make up a little ground, it wasn't enough as the hosts took the Mid-Suburban League girls basketball crossover 53-43.

"We got a win and that's all we can say," said Elk Grove coach Jim Wills. "It's positive we got a win."

But it wasn't the most fundamentally sound game. Neither the Grens (4-2) nor Fillies (1-5) were completely satisfied with their play.

"When you have a 33 turnovers and still get a win, you're fortunate a little bit," Wills said. "We need to be more consistent. We do some great things at times and then some silly things at times."

The same disappointment was echoed by Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro.

"We're making too many mistakes with the ball," she said. "We had 26 turnovers. They have got to make better decisions with the ball. They are making mistakes they shouldn't be making."

However, the game was also played by two youthful programs. In fact, as many freshmen and sophomores started as juniors and seniors.

Elk Grove sophomore Ashley Capotosto led all scorers with 20 points.

"I thought as a team we did good but we need to eliminate turnovers -- myself included," she said. "I had a lot of stupid calls around the basket. In a close game, that shouldn't be happening."

After their early slump, the Fillies outplayed the Grens 24-20 over the middle two quarters.

"We're going to have to turn some things around," Barreiro said. "These kids are going to have to step up to the plate a little more than they have right now. They're a better team than they're showing."

Lianne Davis hit two 3-pointers to lead Barrington with 9 points off the bench. Claire Roggeveen added 8 more of the bench. Stephanie Berg and Emily Harris added 6 points apiece for the Fillies.

"I thought we were a little chilly shooting," Barreiro said. "But we battled hard. We never quit. We played a good hard fought battle. I thought our energy was there today."

Grens' sophomore Olivia Roback had 15 while Kayla Mahoney and Kristy Ottosen scored 5 apiece for the Grens.

"As a team, we set up our offense most of the time and we ran the break good," Capotosto said. "When you're on a roll like that and you get a silly turnover, it brings down your momentum."
