Temple B'nai Israel will host comedian Rick March at 7:30 p.m. today at the temple, 400 N. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.

A dessert reception follows the program. Cost is $7 per person.

Families

• The community is invited to a free dinner on Thanksgiving Day from 1 to 3 p.m. in Fellowship Hall at the Batavia United Methodist Church, 8 N. Batavia Ave. (Route 31) in downtown Batavia.

• Lazarus House invites the community to attend its annual Thanksgiving Feast from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army, 1710 S. Seventh Ave., St. Charles. Dining will begin at noon.

Those able to cook are asked to bring a dish to share. Food should arrive between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. in a disposable container and ready to serve.

Those who plan to attend are asked to call Lazarus House at (630) 587-2144.

Lazarus House, 214 Walnut Street, St. Charles, offers shelter, food, and support services to men, women and children connected to St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia and western rural Kane County who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

• The annual Thanksgiving turkey hike and breakfast begins at 6 a.m. from McCullough Park or the Harkness Family Center, and ends at the Harkness Family Center, 60 S. Fourth St., Aurora.

There will be a choice of two different hike lengths. Hiking on park district paved paths along the Fox River, hikers may start from McCullough Park, Lake Street and Illinois Avenue in Aurora, or take a 3.1 mile circular hike starting and ending at the Harkness Family Center. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 8:15 a.m. and includes pancakes, sausages, cereal, fruit, and beverages. Following breakfast, there is a time of thanksgiving to God in song and a brief devotional message.

Breakfast tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children age 12 and younger. Advance ticket purchases are encouraged. Hike day walk-ins are always welcomed.

• Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors will hold a pre-Hanukkah party and pot luck meal from 12:15 to 3 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

The event will feature holiday foods and music (musicians are welcome to bring their instruments), along with crafts and other activities for children.

Guests are invited to bring latkes (potato pancakes), fruit, sweet treats, or other food, but it isn't necessary.

Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the Festival of Lights. This eight-day festival begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown Dec. 4, and ends at sundown Dec. 12.

Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors is composed of Jewish individuals and Jewish and interfaith families in central Kane County and nearby towns.

Women

"Preparing Our Hearts for Christmas" will be presented by the Women's Ministries of Lord of Life Church from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 26. The church is at Route 38 and LaFox Road, three miles west of Randall Road in LaFox.

Speaker Gail Ficken will discuss "The Perfect Tree." Music will be sung by Georgie Elkin, Patty Hudson and Christina Peters. The evening will also feature a Christmas craft and holiday desserts.

Cost is $5 paid at the door. Reservations are requested and can be made online at www.lolchurch.net, or call the church office at (630) 513-5325, ext. 34.

Mothers

Mothers at the Well will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 30 at St. Patrick Church, 6N491 Crane Road in St. Charles.

Jane Englund will present "Preparing our Hearts and Homes for Christmas."

Englund draws on her experience as a wife and mother, as well as her evangelical faith, to inspire and motivate women of all ages. She will share ideas on how to prepare your heart, the hearts of your family and your home in the midst of the Christmas rush. The presentation will offer ideas for Christmas traditions and organizational and decorating tips.
