Black-tie affair

Many people like their Christmases nostalgic.

They want to hang ornaments passed down through the generations, bake the cookies Grandma made and sing those old-time carols.

For them, if it isn't red, green and gold, it isn't Christmas.

But others want to try something different every now and then.

They want sophistication.

They want a black-tie or contemporary holiday.

We found ornaments, table top items and even trees to fit a black, white and silver theme.

Sonja Cosentini, home style expert for T.J. Maxx, suggests that even if most of your decorations are traditional, you could decorate in this modern style for a cocktail party or dinner.

Just envision really dramatic martini glasses and a silver shaker with a silver tray.

"If you're setting a table for a party you can fill a silver bowl with black and silver oversized ornaments," she said.

Anyone who wants more of the look can decorate a green or white Christmas tree with black and silver ornaments and beaded garlands along with white lights.

This palette brings plenty of sparkle for the holidays. And just seeing it makes us want to dress up.

As a bonus, these shades are popular in décor today. And they will work with any palette.

"There's a bunch of different styles out there for the holidays, said Cosentini. "People are trying to find styles that fit in with the look in their homes."
