Stevenson High School notes
SHS musicians excel: Twenty-seven Stevenson High School students have earned positions in the Illinois Music Educators Association District VII ensembles.
In October, students from 42 high schools in the Northwest suburbs attended auditions. The following Stevenson students were selected:
• All-District Band: Brian Lin, clarinet; Kevin Martelon, clarinet; Dennis Oh, clarinet; Mike Borozenets, bass clarinet.
• All-District Choir: Elliot Englander, bass; Colin Funk, tenor; Brian Rangell, tenor; Ben Ratskoff, tenor; Marissa Simmons, soprano; Jake Stempel, bass; Emma Trevor, alto; Allison Whitley, soprano.
• All-District Orchestra: Jennifer Ding, cello; Stephanie Doong, violin; Narbeh Haroutunian, cello; Michelle Kang, violin; Harrison Kay, violin; Audrey Snyder, cello; Paul Yuan, viola; Chihiro Kashiwakura, bassoon; Angelina Kim, flute; Cala O'Connor, horn; Chinatsu Shimanaka, oboe.
• All-District Jazz Bands: Bryan Jarrett, drums; Spencer Karlovits, bass trombone; Jacob Unterberger, vibes.
• All-District Vocal Jazz Ensemble: Ben Ratskoff, tenor.
Prominent Patriots: Six Stevenson High School students were honored recently with Prominent Patriot Awards.
Melissa Niedrich, Jennifer Brown, Anna Shah and Zifan Yang were lauded for leading the 10th annual Spirit Walk, which raised $15,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's summer camp program.
Jordan Stone was honored for placing sixth in congressional debate at the National Forensics League national championships last summer, only the second time a Stevenson student has placed in the top 10.
Peter Cohen was recognized for turning in a large sum of money that he found on the ground outside school, which had been lost by another student.
Math team takes fourth: Stevenson High School's math team recently placed fourth at the first round of North Suburban Mathematics League competition at Naperville North High School.
Zhihong Qiu placed first in the orals competition, while nine students had perfect papers. They are: senior Justin Kopinsky; juniors Peter Shin, Jimmy Yu and Zach Epstein; sophomores Ranna Zhou, Julia Wang and Sylvia Suh; and freshmen Paul Yuan and Yiding Hao.
Write on: Michelle Bak, Michelle Lee and Ido Moskovich are among 595 high school seniors around the nation selected as outstanding writers in the 2007 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing. The students were honored based on samples of their own best prose or verse and on impromptu themes written under supervision.
