'Big River' audition time flows at ECC

Elgin Community College Musical Theatre will hold auditions for the winter production of "Big River -- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," with Konnie Kay as director and choreographer. John G. Slawson, ECC professor of music, is artistic director.

This adaptation of Mark Twain's classic sweeps you down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel. With an award-winning score from Roger Miller, the late king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.

Auditions for men and women ages 16 and older are scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Singer and actors between the ages of 40-60 are especially needed. African-Americans are encouraged to audition for this production. Auditions are held in room 284D, in the ECC Visual and Performing Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Auditions are by appointment. Those interested in auditioning should call the ECC audition hotline at (847) 214-7188 and provide name and phone number. You will be assigned an audition time. If necessary, callbacks are scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 3.

Actors should prepare a musical number from any Broadway show that represents the best of their voice and range -- except a song from "Big River." Bring a copy of the sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. No taped accompaniment or a cappella singing. Dress comfortably and wear appropriate footwear for the dance portion of the audition.

Rehearsals begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 2. Regular rehearsals are 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Performance dates are Feb. 22-24 and Feb. 29-March 2. For information, call (847) 214-7188.
