Man dies in Elgin townhouse fire
A man was killed Thursday morning when a fire broke out in a townhouse in Elgin.
Elgin firefighters responded at 6:31 a.m. to the 0-100 block of Creekside Circle and arrived minutes later to find heavy fire in a unit on the second floor of the building, officials said in a news release. Additional fire companies were sent to the scene.
Crews initiated extinguishing efforts and began a search of the townhouse, officials said.
A man was found immediately and removed from the building in critical condition. Crews started resuscitation efforts and took the man to Sherman Hospital. However, the man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The victim was the only reported injury, authorities said.
Officials said four units were damaged and the estimated fire loss was roughly $300,000. Affected families who were unable to return to their homes have secured other housing, authorities said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by Elgin Fire Department investigators, the Elgin Police Department and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
