Duncan sends Xavier past Kent St.
Senior forward Josh Duncan scored 20 points and provided a critical second-half spark, leading Xavier to a 78-65 victory over Kent State on Friday in Hoffman Estates.
The third-round win at the Chicago Invitational Challenge was the Musketeers' 10th in 15 meetings with the Golden Flashes dating to 1946 and fifth straight since 1991.
Kent State (3-2) had closed the gap to 46-43 with 11:16 left in regulation when Duncan scored 10 straight points in a two-minute stretch. By the time he was finished, Xavier's lead was 56-45.
The Golden Flashes never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way.
The Musketeers (3-1) closed with a 12-5 run -- including 6 points from senior guard Drew Lavender -- in the final four minutes.
Lavender finished with 16 points while teammates Derrick Brown and B.J. Raymond added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Brown also had 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Xavier will play Indiana today in the finale.
Coppin St. 102, SE Missouri 99 (2 OTs): Tywain McKee scored 33 points and hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in the second overtime Friday as Coppin State (3-2) beat Southeast Missouri State (2-3) in the third round.
Coppin State will play North Carolina-Wilmington on today.
Southeast Missouri State (2-3), which blew a 14-point second-half lead and an 8-point cushion in the first overtime Friday, faces Longwood.
N.C.-Wilmington 80, Longwood 65: Senior center Vladimir Kuljanin scored a team-high 19 points as North Carolina-Wilmington (2-2) held off Longwood University (2-4) in a third-round matchup.
The Seahawks snapped a two-game losing streak as guard Chad Tomko and forward Todd Hendley each added 14 points. Longwood trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half on 6-for-34 (17 percent) shooting.
