Local Veterans Day events scheduled
At 11 a.m. Nov. 10, a special event will be held at the Veterans Memorial, at Main and Cook streets in Barrington. The short program will include a moment of silence to honor all veterans.
The program concludes with the placement of American flags at the memorial to honor all of the fallen service men and women.
The Palatine American Legion Post 690 will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10:25 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial in Community Park, near Northwest Highway and Wood Street.
The ceremony will feature the Legion's Color Guard and Rifle Team and remarks by leaders of the Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion. Mayor Rita Mullins will present the keynote address.

Learn how to live a 'greener' life
The film "Green: The New Red, White and Blue" will be shown at 7 p.m. today at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church, 1025 N. Smith Road, Palatine. A discussion will follow the movie.
The film presents potential solutions to global warming. Admission is free.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the church hosts a presentation on practical ways to live a life of conservation -- for individuals, households and organizations.
Specific ways to reduce environmental impact will be presented and there will be a question-and-answer period. A suggested donation of $10 will be collected, with those under 18 admitted free.

Learn how to lead at BADC academy
The Barrington Area Development Council (BADC) holds its fifth biennial Leadership Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Makray Memorial Golf Club, 1010 S. Northwest Hwy., Barrington.
Featured will be a "Getting to Know You" morning session, and a Leadership Showcase including a keynote address and panel of experts representing area organizations and initiatives.

Girl Scouts unit marks anniversary
Girl Scouts--Sybaquay Council's Winema Service Unit in Barrington holds an open house celebrating their 75th anniversary from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Barrington Area Public Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy.
There will be a display of historical items, scavenger hunt, and light refreshments, as well as an opportunity to join Girl Scouts.
