Mom pleads not guilty of harming son
A Round Lake Beach woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges she broke her infant son's arm.
Ofelia Sanchez, 32, faces a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years if convicted of aggravated battery to a child.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Fred Day said an ambulance was called to Sanchez's home at 1329 Melrose Ave. during the afternoon of Oct. 4.
Sanchez's 9-month-old son was in pain, Day said, and paramedics decided to take the child to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
X-rays revealed the infant's forearm had been broken in two places.
When Sanchez could not provide a reasonable explanation for how the child had been injured, medical personnel called police.
During questioning by Round Lake Beach police, Day said, Sanchez admitted inflicting the injuries because she became frustrated with the infant.
Circuit Judge James Booras scheduled a trial for Feb. 29. He ordered Sanchez, who is held on $75,000 bond, to appear in court Jan. 15.
