Briefs: Sugar Grove family night
The Sugar Grove Public Library will hold a Family Reading Night at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the library, 54 Snow St. The theme will be "Celebrate the Magic of Reading." Parents and children can hear a reading by Thea the Clown. There also will be snacks and a drawing for a door prize. Screening at Arcada
Exclusive screenings of the documentary "Shadow of Afghanistan" are scheduled for today and Thursday at the Arcada Theater, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. The film is directed and produced by Academy Award nominees Jim Burroughs and Suzanne Bauman. The documentary is an "in-depth look at the tragic history of a war-torn land and its relationship to today's headlines," as told through the eyes of an Afghan warrior and two journalists, promoters said. An Almost Winter Day
An Almost Winter Day will be held at County Park in South Elgin between 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday. It will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, horse drawn sleigh rides, a coffee bar, a cookie decorating station, a craft station and a bonfire to keep everyone warm. Santa Claus will arrive at 5 p.m. to light the Christmas tree.
Knights to host breakfast
The Knights of Columbus Council 2191 will host an all-you-can-eat-pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall (Riverview Banquets and Catering), 1117 N. Washington Ave. in Batavia. Breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, coffee and juice. The price is $6 for adults and $3 for children.
One-day photo school

Senior safety seminar set:
Seniors can attend a seminar about staying safe during the holidays Nov. 21 at Delnor-Community Health and Wellness Center, 296 Randall Road, Geneva. The 11 a.m. presentation is being sponsored by the Central Kane County Triad, a consortium of local municipalities and police and fire departments.
