Chicago worker sentenced for lying to grand jury

A worker for the city of Chicago who played a leadership role in a political group that campaigned for Mayor Richard M. Daley has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for lying to federal grand jury.

John Resa pleaded guilty in August to lying to the grand jury, which was investigating Chicago City Hall corruption. He had been given immunity when he testified in October 2006.

Resa was coordinator for the Hispanic Democratic Organization, and a friend of Al Sanchez, also a HDO lieutenant and former head of the Department of Streets and Sanitation.

Sanchez is himself under indictment.

During his grand jury testimony, Resa said he never gave Sanchez any requests from political volunteers regarding city jobs.

Resa was fired from his Water Department job earlier this week.
