Fire destroys garage on Elgin's west side

A fire Wednesday night gutted the garage of a home on Elgin's west side, leaving behind the charred remains of one vehicle and other belongings.

Fire officials responded to the blaze about 6:30 p.m. on the 700 block of Adams Street.

Battalion Chief Dan Wagner said residents were home at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Though the fire destroyed the attached garage and a van parked inside, Wagner said the home sustained minimal fire and smoke damage.

"Everything in the garage was a total loss," Wagner said. "We spent about two hours on scene but the fire was under control relatively quickly, within 15 minutes."

Wagner said fire investigators were still on the scene late Wednesday night trying to determine a cause of the fire.
