Accident claims 4-year-old Elgin boy
The 4-year-old boy hit by a car while walking with his mom in Elgin Tuesday died overnight, police said Wednesday.
Sergio Jasso and his mom, Rocio, 38, were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin after they were hit by a car at the intersection of Dwight and South Liberty streets, police said.
The two were later taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where Sergio was pronounced dead around midnight, police said.
Rocio Jasso -- who lives on the 500 block of Dwight Street, less than a block from the scene of the accident -- was still listed in critical condition this afternoon, hospital staff said.
The pair were struck by the car around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, about 10 minutes after school let out at nearby Huff Elementary.
Police say no charges have been filed against the driver, an 18-year-old woman who was heading south on South Liberty in a white Chrysler 300M.
But police say they are still investigating.
"No charges have been filed," police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said. "(Investigators) were checking on and off during the day on the condition of the mom. It will probably be tomorrow before they have anything else."
Elgin police ask that anyone with information on the crash call the department's traffic unit at (847) 289-2660.
